Lapel stud promoting Grover Cleveland for president, 1904. Woven silk on tin with inset photograph.
Note: This style of lapel stud was not seen prior to 1900, and there are similar studs from the 1904 campaign (e.g. Hake TR 3158 and 3354). Mature photo also allows us to date this to 1904 with some confidence. Though he did not formally seek the nomination, there was a movement to draft Cleveland for a third term in 1904. Only a handful of items promoting Cleveland in 1904 are known, all of which are rare. This stud was unknown to us prior to this example surfacing. A rare "also ran" for the only president to have served two non-consecutive terms.
