Paper "balloon" or Japanese lantern promoting Benjamin Harrison for president and Levi Morton for vice president, 1888. Multicolor. Manufactured by Sprague & French of Norwalk, Ohio. Complete with original wood and wire frame for expanding. Features portraits of Harrison and Morton on opposite panels. Side panels feature American flags inscribed, HARRISON & MORTON, a displayed eagle and shield, and a star. When expanded the lantern is about 22" diameter (approx. 7.25 x 27.5" flat). Given its delicate nature, we have shown it only partially expanded. Paper moderately toned with some minor scattered stains. A few tears along seams and in one eagle panel have been repaired with archival tape. Condition significantly above average for 19th century paper lanterns of this style. An impressive survivor from a 19th century election.
