The election of Abraham Lincoln so divided the country that 11 states withdrew from the union. On February 8, 1861, delegates from the succeeded states met at Montgomery, Alabama and formed the Confederate States of America, electing Jefferson Davis of Mississippi as provisional president. Until the dissolution of the Confederacy in May 1865, the country effectively had two presidents, one in Washington and one in Richmond. This update features a choice selection of items from this fraught period in American history, the era of Honest Abe and Old Jeff.
