Photograph, a portrait of Horace Greeley, c. 1872. Uncredited large format albumen print on thin card mount; decorative gold rule with name printed in boldface below. Dates to Greeley's presidential campaign. Very rare.
Quintessential image of the eccentric newspaper editor who lead a breakaway faction of Republicans attempting to deny Ulysses S. Grant a second term, garnering the nickname, the "Mad Quaker." He suffered a resounding defeat in November, and was dead before the month was out.
