When asked if he stood behind his choice of Missouri Senator Thomas Eagleton for a running mate, despite revelations that Eagleton had undergone phychiatric treatment, McGovern responded, "One thousand percent." A week later, Eagleton was unceremoniously dumped from the ticket in favor of Sargent Shriver.
