Having declined to run for reelection in 1964 to focus on his presidential campaign, Goldwater was a private citizen until 1968, when he took the senate seat occupied by the retiring Carl Hayden. He would serve three more consecutive terms (for a total of five in the chamber), his seat passing to John McCain in 1986.
