Belt buckle featuring bust of James B. Weaver, Greenback Labor Party presidential candidate, c. 1880. Copper with brass applique; two vertical stays, verso. Natural patina.
Easily the most unusual 19th century third party item we've offered, this buckle also comes with great provenance! It's the same example that was featured in the 2016 sale of the Scott Dolson collection (Heritage Auctions, Sale 6168, Lot 43367, $250). The Heritage cataloger links it to pioneer political Americana collector U.I. "Chick" Harris, whose collection was sold in a series of auctions by Tom Slater in the late 1990s. Weaver material is quite rare in general, an object such as this buckle especially so.
