Collection of 26 carte de visite photographs satirizing the flight and capture of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, 1865. Various publishers. Most depict Davis disguised in women's clothing (petticoats) with one depicting him fleeing into a mine shaft, captioned, "taking the underground railroad." One depicts Davis arriving at Fortress Monroe under guard of Negro soldiers. Mostly excellent, with some age toning, soil, and trimmed corners. Slight size variations.

This remarkable collection, possibly the most complete ever assembled, was offered to us by one of our longtime customers and contains many varieties we have never seen. While Davis may have used a disguise in fleeing Richmond before the Confederate capital fell to besieging Union armies, there is nothing to substantiate the widely circulated rumor that he was captured in feminine attire. This did not stop photographers in the North from capitalizing on the amusing and deprecatory imagery, and for a brief period in the summer of 1865 these CDVs were widely circulated, especially popular among gleeful returning Union troops. We are offering the collection intact to another astute collector. Individually, many would sell for upwards of $100, if they could be found. One would be hard pressed to duplicate this collection with focus over decades. Adding to it will be a fun challenge.
