Medalet promoting Zachary Taylor for president, 1848. Brass. DeWitt ZT 1848-21. OBV: Military bust of Taylor, MAJOR GENERAL ZACHARY TAYLOR in semicircle below; inscriptions around, HERO OF PALO ALTO. RESACA DE LA PALMA. MONTEREY. AND BUENA VISTA. 1847. REV: Displayed eagle bearing Union shield on breast, inscription around, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. 1847.

Taylor, a career army officer who led American forces to victory in the Mexican War, was nominated by the Whig convention the following year and his victory in the general election was nearly as complete as that in war: he clobbered his opponent, Michigan senator Lewis Cass. Admired as a soldier by Jefferson Davis and Ulysses Grant (both of whom had served under him in Mexico), and as a political leader by Abraham Lincoln (who stumped for Taylor as an Illinois congressman), Taylor was the second Whig president and also the second to die in office, succumbing to food poisoning aggravated by heat stroke in July 1850.

Items from Taylor's presidential campaign are prized by collectors and seldom come on the market. We offer a choice specimen of this scarce campaign token that celebrates his distinguished service record.

Note: Natural patina may vary from example shown.
