Window sticker promoting Richard Nixon for governor of California, 1962. Gummed paper. Made in the shape of California.
His presidential ambitions thwarted in 1960, Nixon's failure to win the executive office in his home state in 1962 was a profound embarrassment. Many saw this defeat, and Nixon's caustic reaction ("You won't have Dick Nixon to kick around anymore"), as marking the end of his political career. This assessment was, needless to say, premature, for Nixon would mount a surprise comeback in 1968 and win the presidency.
