Wooden nickel opposing the New Frontier reforms of President John F. Kennedy, c. 1961.
Under the banner of the New Frontier, John F. Kennedy entered office with the most ambitious package of reforms since Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal a generation earlier. Even though Kennedy proposed lowering taxes, an expansion of social programs coupled with increased funding for space exploration provoked a backlash from fiscal conservatives, who charged that it was wasteful. A number of anti New Frontier items circulated during Kennedy's presidency, including this wooden nickel.
