Pinback button promoting John Palmer for president and Simon Buckner for vice president, 1896. Pacific Regalia Co., Portland, Oregon.
The National (Gold) Democratic Party was formed by Democrats who refused to join the Free Silver movement and would neither endorse the candidacy of William Jennings Bryan, nor Republican William McKinley. Both septuagenarians, Senator Palmer and Governor Buckner of Kentucky had fought on opposing sides in the Civil War, Palmer a general in the Union army, Buckner in the Confederate; their candidacy thus was seen as symbolic of national reconciliation.
Campaign material for the Gold Democrats is scarce, and this jugate is quite hard to find in this size and in this condition, with strong colors and perfectly centered (nearly invisible line on Palmer's forehead is ink and occurred in manufacture). Also unusual with back paper from a west coast jobber.
