FDR, a Northern liberal, was politically at odds with the Southern conservative base of the party. His electoral success depended on convincing the South that he was its best representative, notwithstanding. This button, evoking the flag of the Confederacy, is perhaps the campaign's most direct appeal to the Southern vote.
