Pinback button opposing Richard Nixon for vice president, 1956.

Terry Carpenter was a Nebraska delegate to the 1956 GOP convention who wanted Nixon removed from Ike's reelection ticket. When asked who would replace the Vice President, he said "Joe Smith." In other words, just about anybody would be better than Nixon! This inspired several "Joe Smith" buttons, circulated by the Stevenson campaign.
