Letter from Robert Kennedy thanking a volunteer in his California campaign, 1968. On official stationery of Southern California Headquarters, Los Angeles. Each is personalized to a different volunteer, dated June 1-3.
In full: "I am very pleased to learn from Kennedy Headquarters of your support toward my candidacy in the California June 4 Primary. The issues which confront our great nation at this time are crucial. I know you share my views in that we are at an important crossroads in our nation's history. I need your help."
Senator Kennedy was gunned down by an assassin as he left his victory celebration the night of the primary. These letters were to be mailed the following day, and were awaiting his signature. In light of the shocking turn of events, another letter was actually mailed. A foresighted volunteer at LA headquarters saved them from the trash, and we acquired them, along with other memorabilia, in the early 2000s. A poignant, tragically ironic item.
