The official poster from an earlier and unsuccessful attempt by Reagan to win the Republican nomination, when he rocked the establishment by challenging a sitting president of his own party. President Ford would narrowly lose the general election to Jimmy Carter, and Reagan would successfully challenge Carter four years later.
