Wallace, a stalwart liberal who had served as Secretary of Agriculture in the first two Roosevelt administrations, was chosen to share FDR's third term reelection ticket in 1940, despite the objections of conservatives and a walk-out by supporters of Vice President Garner. The ticket went on to a comfortable victory, albeit with a smaller margin than Roosevelt had enjoyed in the previous two cycles. Had Wallace not been dumped in favor of Harry Truman four years later, he would have become our 33rd president.
