Pinback button promoting Theodore Roosevelt for president and Robert LaFollette for governor of Wisconsin, 1904. Whitehead & Hoag Co., Newark, NJ.
This scarce jugate features images of the two major leaders of the Progressive movement in the early 20th century. LaFollette helped found the Progressive Party, and resented Roosevelt's usurping the mantle of standard-bearer in 1912, only reluctantly supporting TR's candidacy. "Fighting Bob" would settle for a seat in the Senate, and had to wait until 1924 for the nomination, long after TR was in the grave. A desirable Roosevelt coattail, and early LaFollette button.
