Ted Kennedy ran for the seat vacated by elder brother John when the latter was elected President. Winning the Democratic primary by a two-to-one margin, he received 55% of the popular vote in the general election and would serve in the Senate for nearly half a century, until his death in 2009. Material from his first campaign, which occurred against the backdrop of the Cuban Missile Crisis, is scarce.
