Handbill publicizing a campaign appearance by United States Senate candidate Edward M. Kennedy, Everett, Massachusetts, Oct. 23, 1962. Edward M. Kennedy Committee for U.S. Senator, Brighton, Massachusetts.
Ted Kennedy ran for the seat vacated by elder brother John when the latter was elected President. Winning the Democratic primary by a two-to-one margin, he received 55% of the popular vote in the general election and would serve in the Senate for nearly half a century, until his death in 2009. Material from his first campaign, which occurred against the backdrop of the Cuban Missile Crisis, is scarce.
