Pinback button promoting Lurleen Wallace for governor of Alabama, 1966. Litho. Friends of Wallace, Clayton, Alabama.
A restriction in Alabama's state constitution prevented Gov. George Wallace from seeking a second term in 1966. The first lady of Alabama, Lurleen Wallace, therefore ran as a surrogate for her husband. Mrs. Wallace won the election, but did not finish her term, succombing to cancer while in office, in the midst of her husband's presidential campaign in 1968. She remains the only woman to govern the state, and the only female governor to die in office.
The slogan on this button was used (with America substituted for Alabama) as the official slogan of the Wallace presidential campaign.
