In the summer of 1965, Sen. Robert Kennedy participated in an expedition to the Yukon that scaled a 14,000-foot peak named by the Canadian government in honor of his brother John—until then the highest unscaled peak in North America. Many Democrats, who saw Robert as the torch-bearer of the Kennedy legacy, worried for his safety. At the time, it was assumed President Johnson would run for a second term in 1968, and that Kennedy would be favored to receive the nomination in 1972. Some were whispering "Bobby in '72" as early as his Senate victory in '64. None could foresee the tragic events that would lead him to enter the race in 1968, culminating in his murder in Los Angeles.
