The modern campaign poster traces its origins to a series of prints published by the New York engraver Nathaniel Currier for presidential elections between 1844 and 1876. In the days before mass media, these distinctive prints, with their folksy, color-tinted renderings of the major presidential tickets, served to introduce the electorate to candidates with an intimacy hitherto unknown. Immensely popular, they were seldom preserved long after the votes were counted, and hence few survive. Of the series, those issued for the Taylor vs. Cass election of 1848 are especially desirable. That year, Currier experimented with a horizontal format, all other years being done in a characteristic vertical banner style.
