Pinback button celebrating the return of former President Theodore Roosevelt following his African safari, 1910. The Whitehead & Hoag Co., Newark, New Jersey, with "Compliments of C. D. Kenny Co." advertising back paper. Roosevelt is depicted as the sun rising over snow-capped mountains, a forested landscape and small settlement in the middle distance. In the foreground, Uncle Sam stands lifting his hat in a salute. A choice, perfectly centered example, grading a strong 9 out of 10, with some foxing around the metal collet (not visible from front) and surface bumps visible only in reflected light.
TR arrived in New York harbor on June 18, 1910, returning from an extended African safari. He was greeted by Mayor William Gaynor, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Henry Cabot Lodge and William Loeb, and a parade was held in his honor. This pinback was issued by a Baltimore coffee company to capitalize on the public's adulation, and possibly to encourage Roosevelt to make another run in 1912.
