One of only a handful of pinbacks issued for the Dixiecrats who ran on a pro-segregation platform, polling 2% of the popular vote and receiving 38 electoral votes. Thurmond, who later moderated his views on race, represented South Carolina in the Senate until his retirement at age 100.
