It is customary for presidents to leave their mark on the White House, but the changes are usually confined to minor renovations and redecorating. Harry Truman undertook a more ambitious project: the construction of a balcony inside the South Portico. The president fended off criticism from foes in Congress, asserting the practical and aesthetic value of the expensive addition. When Truman faced election in 1948, the petty scandal provided fodder for the opposition, and spawned this memorable button.
