Medalet celebrating the fall of Vicksburg to Union forces under Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, 1863. Silvered copper. DeWitt USG 1868-35. Holed for suspension. OBV: Military bust of Grant to right; epaulette has two stars; inscription around, MAJ. GEN. U.S. GRANT/ VICKSBURG JULY 4 1863. REV: Displayed eagle with arrows and olive branch; around, THE UNION MUST AND SHALL BE PRESERVED; below, VICTORY.

DeWitt notes: "This piece by Key of Philadelphia was issued in 1863 but was widely circulated in 1868." Six were struck in silver, and most in silvered copper as the present example. Scarce early Grant issue, grading above average.
