Wallace, whose campaign tapped into white middle class anxieties and resentment over the political empowerment of blacks and minorities, chose retired Air Force general Curtis LeMay to bolster the ticket's credibility on foreign policy and national defense. LeMay, however, proved an embarrassment when he called for the use of nuclear weapons if the North Vietnamese could not be defeated by conventional warfare. Still, the Wallace-LeMay ticket polled close to 10 million votes, winning five states, all in the deep South.
Jugate pinbacks for Wallace and LeMay are rather uncommon.
