Brooch promoting William Henry Harrison for president, 1840. Enamel under glass set in ornate brass frame. Unlisted in DeWitt. Original clasp.
Sulfide brooches enjoyed a brief vogue in the 1840s, and are among the most desirable 19th century campaign items. Due to their delicate construction, few survive in anything approaching "like new" condition. Once in a while, however, we are pleasantly surprised when one such as the present example surfaces, free of the common defects that beset the vast majority. This unlisted variant also retains the original clasp.
