Autograph document signed "Wm. H. Harrison," one page, dated "Greenvill" (Greenville, Ohio), June 11, 1794. A "Return for Whiskey" for the crew of a barge consisting of six men and one woman, on a two-day excursion on the Ohio River. Requests fourteen rations of whiskey from the company quartermaster. Harrison signs as aide-de-camp (A.d.C) in two places. Uneven edges, lightly toned, with minute foxing and ghosting.

Harrison, a young lieutenant in the Legion of the United States, was serving as aide-de-camp to General "Mad" Anthony Wayne in the closing days of the Northwest Indian War. Two months later, he would participate in the major battle of the war, at Fallen Timbers, and was present the following year at the signing of the Treaty of Greenville, which ended the conflict and opened the Ohio frontier for settlement. He would eventually replace Wayne, and his military service brought him national acclaim, fueling a career in politics that culminated with his election to the Presidency in 1840. His presidential campaign utilized his martial exploits and he was often portrayed in uniform. Autograph material for our ninth president is rare. This specimen of Harrison's handwriting is also an interesting early American frontier document.
