Medal, a satirical dollar ridiculing William Jennings Bryan and the Free Silver movement, 1896. Type metal. Zerbe 97. OBV: Crudely executed Liberty head facing left (after Morgan dollar); IN GOD WE TRUST FOR THE OTHER 47, above; 1896, below; six 6-pointed stars on either side. REV: Displayed eagle clutching arrows and olive branch; BILLY BRYAN IDEA OF FREE COINAGE, around; BELOW, 16 TO 1. Plain edge. Crudely struck with light surface wear and minor rim abrasions. Tiny hole at 7:00 likely an inclusion which occurred in casting.
The tokens associated with the 1896 campaign, issued in opposition to Bryan and the Democratic platform advocating the free coinage of silver at the ratio of 16:1 with gold, are known collectively as Bryan Money by numismatists. Zerbe lists this variety as scarce. Choice example with fine detail in the Liberty head and eagle.
