Commercial air travel in 1940 was still largely a preserve of the rich, and there was yet no Air Force (military pilots flew for the Army). A booster of the emerging aeronautics industry, Willkie traveled extensively by plane while on the campaign trail, and threw some shade at President Roosevelt for his known fear of flying.
